While many of us have grown up watching funny, sad, quirky, memorable and often not so memorable ads on the telly, here are some amazing facts most of us don’t know about our favorite type of marketing: Television Advertising.

Let’s get started!

1) The first Television Commercial was broadcast in the United States at 2:30pm on July 1, 1941. The cost for the 20-second TV spot was $9 and it aired in New York City during a baseball game
between the Dodgers and Philadelphia.

2) When buying Television Airtime, it is crucial to understand that it is more effective to reach fewer people more often, than everyone in the nation only once!

3) Humor has been found to be the most powerful tool for Brand Advertisers.

4) Commercials are shown during shows rather than before or after, to capitalize on the suspense-generated emotions. This retains a level of urgency while the human eye processes new visuals.

5) A 30-minute block on Television includes 22 minutes of programming, 6 minutes of National Television Advertisement and 2 minutes of Local Television Advertisement.

6) In a time span of 10 hours of TV programming, 3 hours will be used for Advertising.

7) Academy-Award Winner Ridley Scott directed a TV spot for Apple in 1984.

8) Since the 1970s, commercial for Tobacco companies have been banned.

9) In Europe, the name of the Ad Agency appears either at the beginning or at the end of the spot.

10) In Germany, public Television Stations can only air commercials between 5pm and 8pm (With Sundays and Holidays excepted).

What are the 4 P’s?

12) A successful Product Marketing Campaign is based on a principle referred to as the “FOUR P’S” (Product, Price, Place, Promotion).

13) In addition to the Product Marketing Campaign’s four Ps, a successful Service Marketing Campaign needs three more Ps to thrive. People, Process, Physical Evidence.

14) There are 6 types of Television Advertisements: Political, Product Placement, Promotional, Sponsorship, Infomercials, the Commercial Doughnut. The Doughnut is a commercial template which does not depict specific products or services. Start up companies generally buy these cheap doughnuts and lay their company information over it. The disadvantage with Doughnuts is that more than one company (sometimes hundreds) will have the same commercial template and it diminishes a company’s individuality.

15) The biggest American Broadcast Networks are ABC, NBC and CBS.

16) Univision, a Spanish-Language Network, is the fifth largest TV network behind CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox.

17) Cable TV offers 30 second spots for as low as $2 running between Midnight and 6am.

18) Michael Jordan’s Nike and Brand Jordan Shoes are the best selling basketball shoes of all time. In 2008, 40 of the 50 selling basketball shoes were Jordan or Jordan Brand shoes. When Michael Jordan was deciding which product to endorse, Adidas refused to pay his asking price.
