Tip #1 – The Script
A strong TV spot starts with a strong hook! You have 2 seconds
to grab your audience’s attention before you present a well paced argument as to why they can’t live without your product. This is where an experienced Direct-Response Copy Writing comes into the picture. He can weave a short form plot that can mean tremendous sales. Regardless of the production value and the pretty colors, no commercial will work unless it’s founded on a strong script.
Tip #2 – Location!
Locations can be one of the most expensive items on your budget ranging anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 per day. Can you get away with 1 location instead of 5? For most of our productions, we generally rent one location and make it seem like three or four completely different sets. You would be amazed at how much of a difference a bit of lighting and art decoration can make. With enough creativity, you could even make the same room look different.
Tip #3 – Non-Union Actors
Actors who are part of a union such as the Screen Actors Guild, also known as SAG, will require a higher pay per day. You would also have to pay a residual fee every few weeks to continue running the ad. Working with union actors could inflate the budget quite a bit.
Unless your brand calls for a celebrity and you have the budget, you can hire non-union actors who have yet to make it on a TV show. There are plenty of extremely talented and very professional thespians who would love to work on a commercial project.
